Lone Star Texan rides into College

Tuesday 25 June 2013

Bedford College has been playing host to the Dean of the fabulously named Lone Star College-Montgomery, Conroe, Texas.

Steve Scheffler is on a fact-finding mission about further and higher education in the UK and has been welcomed at one of the country’s most successful colleges.

Meeting with many important players from the executives to the stable team, Steve has seen the most modern Bedford College has to offer: The Brundtland Building, an example of the very latest eco construction, to the Victorian pile of The Mansion House in Old Warden Park – all of it vital in providing training to equip young people for employment in the 21st Century.

Steve is particularly interested in seeing how Bedford College connects with its communities and to that end has been working closely with the award-winning marketing team.

As part of his tour he visited Shuttleworth College which has undergone a revival since being taken over by Bedford College in 2009. There he met Director Mike Johnston, and was taken on a tour by one of the knowledgeable members of staff.

Stopping to his have his photo taken outside The Mansion House Steve said: “We have nothing like this back in Texas – but we do have some areas of comparison in education and hope both colleges can learn something from each other.”

Steve has been staying in Broom with contacts made through the international friendships forged by the Rotary Club. He has also written a blog covering his trip to the UK.
