Tuesday 21 May 2013

Bedford College has officially opened the latest in its chain of successful Learning Centres, this time at 402-420 Silbury Court East, Silbury Boulevard, Milton Keynes.

CEO of Bedford College Ian Pryce said: “Milton Keynes is important to us, many Bedfordians work in MK and we hope will access our training here on their employment doorstep. We thank MK Council for its support – we have been made to feel very welcome here in MK.”

Cllr David Hopkins, Portfolio Holder for Economic Development with MK Council said he had made the journey in reverse from a North Bucks village, which now houses the Open University, to Bedford as a school boy and now was: “Delighted to welcome Bedford College to MK.”

The Learning Centres format has been successful in Bedford, Luton and Rushden, Northants where teams offer a helping hand to individuals who want to learn the basics of IT or who wish to convert self-taught skills into a recognised certificate or who want to upgrade their expertise to secure a promotion. The Milton Keynes centre is run by Kathryn Squires, who also oversees the Rushden Learning Centre. She thanked her “wonderful team” for making the MK Centre such an early success with more than 150 learners signed up in the first few weeks.

The same building houses the Bedford College Apprenticeship Academy, which opened in September 2011, and runs courses in accountancy and IT for young people linked to employers.

The building will now also be a gateway to a wide range of skills for individuals and employers covering not just IT but some basic “employability” skills which will aid people in the search for work.  The team will work in partnership with other agencies to help people find employment

Said Bedford College Director Sharon Chinneck: “Our experience is that 1,000s of people have found our Learning Centres a welcoming and supportive environment where they can overcome their fears of IT and ‘classroom’ learning and instead go on to get jobs and promotion. We will replicate that atmosphere in our MK Learning Centre.”
