College Ofsted report “a boost for Bedford”

Tuesday 29 April 2014

Bedford College’s Good, with Outstanding features, Ofsted reinforces its position as one of the best in the UK.

Expansion such as Shuttleworth College in 2009 and improvements to such acquisitions is part of the organisation’s track record.  Late last year it was praised by Ofsted for its care standards ‘ensuring Outstanding outcomes for young people’ at Shuttleworth College.

In Ofsted’s most recent inspection of Bedford College, the College was praised as Outstanding across all categories for its work with 14-16 year olds from local schools. This is particularly important in view of the College’s proposal to launch a Technical Academy for 13-19 year olds in September 2015.

It was also praised for helping young people towards employment: “Teachers have excellent links with industry and use these effectively to develop high levels of industry-related skills, which prepare students for the world of work,” said the report.

Principal and Chief Executive of Bedford College for 15 years Ian Pryce explained the College was meeting the demands of more and more people in the community:

“Since our last inspection we have taken on and improved Shuttleworth College, created The Bedford Sixth Form and massively expanded our apprenticeship work.”

“The Ofsted report is very strong and confirms how well we serve our community.  There are 34 judgements, 4 of them Outstanding and 30 of them Good.”

“This is one of the most consistently strong inspection reports in our sector.  It shows that Bedford College provides a very high standard of education whether you study at the College or in the workplace, whether you are aged 14-16, 16-18 or an adult.  We provide a high quality and comprehensive offer.

“I am particularly pleased that our work with secondary school age students was seen to be Outstanding across the board; that Ofsted said our teachers and managers have high expectations; that our students behave with maturity and respect, and that we have excellent progression to employment and university.

“It is also pleasing that Ofsted said our major projects have been very well managed highlighting the investments at Shuttleworth College and The Bedford Sixth Form.

“This is a report that is a real boost for our staff and an even bigger boost for Bedford.”
