5 Star College

Thursday 6 February 2014

Bedford College has been awarded a 5 star rating by the British Safety Council.

The award recognises the Health and Safety Management Systems in place at the organization, which employs more than 700 staff and has nearly 16,000 students. It is the first time a FE College has taken this top honour, competing against major organisations across the country.

A few months ago Bedford College, in association with West Suffolk College and Norfolk Educational Services, were runners-up in a SHP-IOSH (Safety and Health Practitioner) Best Achievement in Public Services awards.

Prior to that Bedford College, with the same partners, won a Health & Safety Champion Award for work placement advice, which was shared with all members of the Association of Colleges.

Barrie Baldwin, H & S Manager said: “Health and Safety is often misrepresented in the media, but in the real work place, it saves lives and prevents accidents and injuries. This is especially important when an organisation has responsibility for thousands of young people.”

“We are especially proud to have the 5 Star award, which we hope will reassure parents that we strive to instil in our young students a responsible approach to their own safety and that of their friends.”

“We also endeavour to share this good practice with other colleges so that public money is not wasted re-inventing the safety wheel."
