Sponsor of Central Bedfordshire UTC

Wednesday 4 June 2014

Secretary of State Michael Gove has asked Bedford College to become the new sponsor of the Central Bedfordshire University Technical College (UTC), based at Houghton Regis.

This will formally take effect from September 2014 but the College will be working with the existing staff and governors immediately.

Bedford College Principal and Chief Executive, Ian Pryce CBE welcomed the opportunity and set out the College’s commitment to parents and pupils:

“Bedford College is the largest provider of education and skills training in Central Bedfordshire and we are particularly strong in technical areas especially Engineering.  Ofsted has recently judged us outstanding for our secondary education, and praised our excellent links with industry.  We have shown our ability to grow educational institutions and achieve excellent outcomes for pupils and students.  We believe that there is strong demand for technical education within the local community and we will begin work immediately with parents, pupils and the staff to ensure the UTC quickly gains a reputation as one of the best local schools in the area.  I am delighted the Secretary of State has chosen us for this task and we are excited at the prospect of serving that community.”

Background

UTCs are newly-established 14-19 Academies which focus on combining an academic education with technical and practical learning that engages young people and meets the needs of modern business.  UTCs provide high-quality full-time study for young people that choose a more practically-orientated education.  An important part of the Government’s school reforms, UTCs are a national initiative championed by former Education Secretary Lord Baker aimed at providing opportunities for young people to undertake a more specialist technical curriculum.

(This development should not be confused with a separate consultation by Bedford College to open a Bedford Technical Academy from September 2015.)
