40+ Apprenticeships on offer

Monday 10 August 2015

Bedford College is seeking young people to take up more than 40 apprenticeships offered by a range of employers from Traka PLC to Bedford Borough Council.

In a new move there will be an Apprenticeship Zone at the Bedford College Open Day on Thursday August 20th when 16-year-olds from all schools are welcome to find out where to take their next step once GCSE results are announced.

Employers from across Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes will have vacancies on offer at this event.

Gina Bubbins who leads on business development at Bedford College and whose team works with 1,000 companies said: "We have employers crying out for good quality 16 and 17-year-olds to take up apprenticeships which involve on-going training with Bedford College. It is a great way to earn while you learn between 16 and 18 and many of our apprentices have gone on to promotion with great employers."

The "raising participation" to the age of 18 need not mean staying at school. At 16 years old students can further their education at FE institutions such as Bedford or Shuttleworth College or at the Bedford Sixth Form.

In addition to apprenticeships, 16-year-olds can make the move from school into full-time courses in a huge range of subjects which lead to employer-recognised qualifications. These can lead on to higher education or degree-level learning via timetables which fit in with employment.

The prestigious campus of Bedford Sixth Form in Bromham Road is a stepping stone between school and university.
