Sixth Form shortcut to success from September 2016

Tuesday 6 October 2015

Sixth Form students can take a shortcut to success ahead of the opening of the proposed state-of-the-art Bedford Technical Academy at Wixams in 2017.

They can join a specialist sixth form in Bedford from next September 2016 to give them a head start in the Technical Baccalaureate and/or STEM A-Levels to speed towards high quality technology and science careers.

The early option is to meet the demand demonstrated by families locally for a true STEM (science technology engineering maths) sixth form backed by the Bedford College Academies Trust (BCAT).

Demand for a modern Technical Academy approach to learning was clearly demonstrated by parents who were anxious to sign up as soon as possible when approached by BCAT. The news that the academy will be in Wixams, with a possible entry age drop to 11 to fit into the two-tier primary-secondary format was welcomed. But those looking for Sixth Form places don’t want to wait until 2017 and BCAT is launching a special facility for them in Bedford 2016. Students will be moved to the Wixams location in the “upper sixth”.

Principal Paul Spyropoulos said: “We have demand from families who want the unique education which we can offer post-16 students. This will include a suite of qualifications which will be welcomed by the Russell Group and other top quality universities, and by employers who need 18-year-olds who are educated to an excellent standard so they can to step into these fast-moving technology-based careers which includes medicines, bio sciences, the veterinary sector and those in product and games design.”

Sixth Form students do not need to live in the Wixams area and are welcome from Central Beds or Bedford Borough areas.
