Judith is UK champion

Friday 24 June 2016

The male dominated world of IT networking has a female champion at Bedford College: Judith Larsen.

Judith is the ONLY woman in the UK to achieve the ‘Expert Level Excellence’ status from international computing giants Cisco.

Judith’s skills have been recognised by cohorts of students on their way to careers which keep computers linked up across the globe.

One of them was Oliver Davis, who now works at Blue Chip Bedford www.bluechip.co.uk, the largest independent IBM support company in the UK.  Representing Bedford College, Oliver won a UK Skills IT networking competition in 2015 and has a place waiting at the World Skills event in Abu Dhabi in 2017. He completed his Foundation Degree in Networking at Bedford College, which is acknowledged by experts as having world class equipment.

Judith’s achievements locally and globally can be put into context by understanding that only 935 instructors in the world met the Cisco standard for Expert Instructor Excellence in 2015. Of the 22 in the UK she is the only woman.

“I would like to see more girls coming from school and moving into networking - there are more proportionately in Germany for instance. But it often seems they prefer coding and software, or website design,” said Judith.

Principal and CEO Ian Pryce CBE said: “Bedford College has championed technology training for those aged 16 plus but more needs to be done to encourage girls and boys to concentrate on the courses which can lead them into well paid IT-related careers.”
