Animal Management with Science Advanced (Level 3)

The Extended Diploma is a two year full-time study programme that includes both animal management and science. You will study 15 subjects, three of which are externally assessed.  The programme enables you to gain knowledge and understanding in the areas of animal management and science alongside the development of practical and technical skills.  It will provide you with the theoretical knowledge necessary to progress into employment, higher education or further training within a wide range of animal-related sectors.

The College animal collection houses a wide range of domestic and zoological species providing opportunities for you to develop your practical skills and abilities in a supportive environment.

Our animal zones enable the study of species ranging from small tropical cockroaches within our humidity zone to desert meerkats in our African zone and opportunities to work outdoors with our herd of alpaca and pygmy goats.

I was interested in a career in animal nutrition and I had a couple of options open to me, but this route of studying a specialist Animal Science course was the most appealing.  It’s great to be around a group of people that have the same interests and passions as me, everyone loves animals and we’re all focused on the same thing.

This course gives you a unique opportunity to work with a diverse range of animals, which you would have difficulty finding grouped together all in one place. We spend a lot of time in the Animal Care Unit, which is where almost 400 species of animals live in areas that recreate their natural environments.  There is a biome tropical area with birds, tortoises and iguanas, and there is also a working farm with all the related animals.

The tutors are all very nice people, who have had different careers related to animal sciences.  There is always a tutor who has experience in the particular area you are interested in, so they can steer you in the right direction and give you insight into specific job roles.

My next step is going to university, I’ve got a place at Harper Adams in Newport, Wales and I’ll be studying Bioveterinary Science.
