Children & Young People Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3

The aim of this apprenticeship is to prepare you to become an Early Years Educator. This will enable you to work with children from birth to 5 years and gain knowledge of children aged 5 to 7 years. The introductory units will give you an insight into how children develop and learn, while the choice of optional unites can be tailored to meet the vocational area you are working in. Once you have successfully achieved the qualification from this apprenticeship you will be able to enter the workforce as an Early Years Educator.

Entry requirements

Grade requirements: You will need A*-D in English, Maths (Level 9-3) A Level 2 Childcare qualification (or equivalent) and/or experience is desirable.

Other requirements: To begin this apprenticeship you must be employed in an Early Years Setting for a minimum of 30 hours a week. You must also be willing to undergo an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Course content

During this apprenticeship you will study a range of topics structured around four main themes:

  • Health and well-being 
  • Legislation, frameworks and professional practice 
  • Play, development and learning for school readiness 
  • Professional development

Assessment methods

You will be assessed through observations in the workplace, exams for functional skills and written assessments. Your written assessments will form a portfolio, which will be completed online using the College’s Virtual Learning Environment.


You will gain the following qualifications:

Early Years Educator NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma


  • Employment Rights & Responsibilities
  • Functional Skills in English, ICT and maths

We would also recommend that you complete a Paediatric First Aid course.

Further study and career options

Further study: On successful completion you will be able to progress on to Higher Education. Bedford College offers a suite of Foundation Degree courses in both Early Years and Educational Studies. These can be studied whilst working and you can top up to a full degree with an extra of study at university.

Future careers: Full-time employment options on completion of this apprenticeship include practitioner in day nurseries, nursery schools or reception classes in primary schools, and pre-school worker.

If you are over 19, your attendance in College will be subject to a functional skills assessment.

Next steps

To be eligible for an apprenticeship you must either be employed on a full-time contract by an employer willing to support your training or have an offer of employment as an apprentice. Bedford College can help you find a job role with an employer if you don’t already have one.
