Beauty Therapy Services City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma

This course will equip you with the skills needed to work in the beauty industry as a mobile or self-employed therapist. The course is designed to introduce you to a beauty therapy career, either as a career change or to explore beauty therapy as a hobby or interest. The course will take one academic year to complete and will award you with a recognised and insurable qualification on successful completion.

Entry requirements

To begin this course it is desirable that you hold GCSEs at grade A*-C in English and another academic subject, although other work-related qualifications will be considered. It is essential that you have an excellent understanding of both written and spoken English. Entry is also subject to a successful interview.

Course content

The course will cover a range of topics, including health and safety legislation, working within the beauty industry, client care and communication techniques. You will also learn about facials and skincare, manicure and pedicure techniques, waxing, brow treatments, make-up and tanning techniques. 

During the course you can study the following units:

  • Working in beauty-related industries
  • Following health and safety practice in the salon
  • Client care and communication in beauty-related industries
  • Providing facial skin care
  • Providing manicure treatments
  • Providing pedicure treatments
  • Applying make-up
  • Shaping and colouring eyebrows
  • Applying skin tanning techniques
  • Removing hair using waxing techniques.

During the course you will also have the opportunity to attend the Professional Beauty exhibition at ExCeL London. You will also have the opportunity to study for an additional qualification: Contact Dermatitis Level 2 Award.

Assessment methods

You will be assessed by carrying treatments on clients in a realistic working environment at BROOKS, Bedford College’s very own hair and beauty salon. The assessment criteria are set by the awarding body (City & Guilds) and are verified by the course tutor/assessor. Following the delivery of theory topics, computer-based end of unit tests will be taken. There is an opportunity to gain a pass, merit or distinction in the practical assessments.

Further study and career options

Completion of this course can lead to a second year of study, where you will gain a Beauty Therapy Level 3 Certificate to advance your skills further. Each course will lead to employment either in a salon or as a self-employed therapist – your course tutors will advise you on your best progression route during your course.

Additional information

To take part in this course you will need to purchase a kit, uniform and textbook through the College; these will be explained further during your information session/interview.
