Hair Professionals Apprenticeship Level 2

This intermediate apprenticeship programme will cover the essential skills and knowledge needed to be a junior basic hairstylist. The course will equip you with the ability to offer a wide range of hair services to clients and will consist of two years of study. You will receive training on the job, allowing you to earn, learn and train all within the same time frame. You will be released one day per week to attend College training sessions, where you will cover theoretical, subject-specific knowledge, maths and English studies (dependent of GSCE maths and English results) and additional enhancements to practical training.
Entry requirements
Grade requirements: You will need a minimum of two GCSEs which must include English and maths at grades 9 – 3 or A* - D, , or equivalent and one other academic subject.
Other requirements: You must be in full-time employment in a hairdressing salon where you can gain the work-based experience to support your training to a Level 2 standard. You will also need to demonstrate a keen interest in hairdressing and be able to address clients and colleagues in a professional manner. Your personal presentation will need to be of a good standard and you should be willing to work flexible hours within the agreed contract hours to suit the work place. You will be asked to undertake an initial assessment and interview prior to being accepted onto the programme.
Course content
During this apprenticeship you will study a range of topics, including:
- Consultation
- Shampooing and conditioning hair and scalp
- Styling and finishing hair
- Colouring
- Cutting
- Perming
You will also have the opportunity of participating in Brook’s annual Hair and Beauty show and attending an annual trip to the Salon International event held at Docklands London.
Assessment methods
You will be continuously assessed in the working salon environments. All theoretical knowledge is delivered within a classroom setting, developing bite-sized learning sections, with assessments to be carried out via internal online multiple choice tests. Results of these tests are immediate, so feedback can be given instantly upon their completion.
To complete the qualification, there is a “trade test” assessment to be carried out via external City and Guilds examiners. This test will only be applied for and carried out when the salon employer, training provider and apprentice are in agreement for the final part of the apprentice journey to be met.

Further study and career options
Further study: You could go on to study the advanced Hairdressing Apprenticeship Level 3. You could also undertake a Level 2 Media Make-up course, an NVQ Level 2 in Beauty Therapy, or continue within salon employment as a salon hairstylist.
