Gas Engineering Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3

This apprenticeship is designed by key employers in the gas industry and is one of the new 'trailblazer apprenticeships'. It provides the skills and underpinning knowledge for both basic and advanced gas systems and includes an end-test at the end of the apprenticeship which includes both a knowledge and practical skills test. This qualification is aimed at new technicians entering the industry who wish to be trained in basic and complex gas systems which includes the routine maintenance, reactive maintenance and commissioning and de-commissioning of gas appliances in a variety of working environments. The apprenticeship will allow you to be on the Gas Safe register, Water Register and the G3 Unvented Hot Water Competent Person schemes once an end point assessment has been completed
Entry requirements
Requirements: You will need a Plumbing and Heating NVQ Level 2 and Gas Safe Mentor.
Course content
During this apprenticeship you will study a range of topics, including:
- Health and safety in gas utilisation
- Scientific principles in gas utilisation
- Combustion and properties of gas
- Buildings, services and structures
- Gas safety principles
- Specific core installation and maintenance
- Tightness test, purge, commission and de-commission gas pipework up to 35 mm (1¼) diameter in small gas installations
- Install, commission and de-commission gas pipework up to 35 mm (1¼) diameter in domestic and small commercial premises
- Install domestic gas water heaters and wet central heating appliances
- Maintain gas water heating and wet central heating appliances
- Install domestic gas space heating appliances
- Maintain domestic gas space heating appliances
- The installation, commissioning and safety aspects of hot water systems for domestic use in accordance with UK building regulations
- Central heating systems
- Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations and Water Byelaws in the UK 1
Assessment methods
You will be assessed via the following methods: e-assessment, written examination, practical assignment, multiple choice examination, portfolio of evidence and an end point assessment.
Qualifications
You will gain the following qualification:
Level 3 Diploma in Gas Engineering - Pathway D
(aligned to CCN 1, CPA 1, MET 1, CENWAT, Unvented) water regulations
Note: There is an additional one-off charge of £386 to cover the cost of the Diploma
Further study and career options
Further study: Upon successful completion of this apprenticeship you could go on to study towards a Level 4 Foundation Degree in Building Services.
Future careers: Entry to the Competent Persons Scheme in gas, water and unvented hot water and work within the industry.
Additional information
You will be required to wear PPE boots and overalls or company issue clothing.
