Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) Level 4 Certificate

This City & Guilds course will improve your confidence and practical skills if you are already teaching or wish to teach in the sector. The qualification is a good starting point if you wish to pursue a career in teaching in the Further Education sector.

Entry requirements

This course is suitable if you wish to teach adults in further education colleges, adult education centres or the workplace. This is an introductory course, so no previous teaching experience or access to teaching is required.

To start you will need:

  • To be suitably qualified and/or experienced to teach in a subject, usually at Level 3 if you are new to teaching
  • Adequate literacy and ICT skills.

Course content

This course will cover planning sessions and schemes, assessment, teaching methods, teaching resources and evaluation.

During the course you will cover topics including:

  • Role, responsibilities and boundaries of role in relation to teaching
  • Appropriate teaching and learning approaches in the specialist area
  • Session planning skills
  • How to deliver inclusive sessions that motivate learners
  • Different assessment methods and the need for record keeping.

Assessment methods

Assessment is through two written assignments, a theory and a practical, each consisting of seven tasks. As part of the practical assignment you will plan and deliver a 15 minute micro teaching session to the rest of your class on a suitable subject of your choice.

Further study and career options

In order to become a qualified lecturer or trainer you will need to take a further course of study, such as the Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) or the Certificate of Education. This PTLLS qualification will enable you to register with the Institute for Learning (IFL), as all new entrants to Further Education teaching are required to do.
