Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) Level 4 Certificate

This one-year part-time course is perfect if you work or want to work as a teacher/trainer in the further education and skills sector. It is ideal if you have just started a teaching/training role, or are seeking career progression in your area of work. If you are an assessor, work with learners on a one-to-one basis or teach in industry you will find this to be a great course to improve your skills.

Entry requirements

This is an 'in-service' course, so to start you must be engaged in teaching in post-compulsory education (i.e. further education, higher education or adult education) for at least 30 years through the academic year.

The programme is suitable for staff currently teaching in:

  • Further education
  • Higher education
  • Training and education in industry and commerce
  • Training in public sector services (such as the NHS, police and social services).

You must also have suitable qualifications in the subject you teach, normally at NQF Level 3 or above (or equivalent). You should also have (or be working towards) Level 2 English and Maths.

Course content

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
  • Delivering education and training
  • Methods of assessing and meeting learner needs
  • Creating schemes of work and lesson plans

  • Key aspects of relevant legislation
  • Communication methods
  • Procedures for effective assessment
  • Using resources.

Assessment methods

You will be assessed by completing a portfolio of evidence that shows you have taken part in a minimum of 30 hours of practice and three hours of observed and assessed practice which meet the required standard.

Further study and career options

By successfully completing this course you'll gain a fundamental understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a teacher/trainer in relation to legislation, equality, diversity, inclusivity and meeting the needs of learners. You will be able to use initial and diagnostic assessments and plan and deliver inclusive teaching and learning. You can pursue a number of additional qualifications, such as a Certificate in Education, or a Training, Assessment and Quality Assurance qualification.
